Memes are considered an important part of Internet culture. More recent genres include "dank" and surrealist memes, as well as short-form videos such as those uploaded on Vine and TikTok. ![]() With the rise of social media platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, memes have become more diverse and can spread quickly. The term "Internet meme" was formally proposed by Mike Godwin in 1993, with early memes including images and GIFs spread via messageboards, Usenet groups, and email. Characteristics of memes include their susceptibility to parody, their use of intertextuality, their propagation in a viral pattern, and their evolution over time. Inspired by the concept of memes proposed by Richard Dawkins in 1972, Internet memes can take various forms, such as images, videos, GIFs, and various other viral sensations. On April 27th, 2018, Twitter user posted a number of images referencing the film and received more than 50,000 retweets and 90,000 likes in three days. On February 21st, Twitter released a Moments page about the Black Panther variation of the meme.įollowing the release, of Avengers: Infinity War in April 2018, people continued to post spoilers without context. On February 16th, 2018 by Twitter user The post features a shot from the end of the 1980 horror film The Shining and the caption “black panther spoiler but i don’t give you context.” The post (shown below, left) received more than 10 retweets and 30 likes. The trend continued for the film Black Panther the following year. Within six months, the post received more than 495 points (97% upvoted). Two weeks later, on December 31st, Redditor Arkham_Z posted a version of the meme featuring the comic book character Hellboy and referencing the same Kylo Renn scene in the /r/INJUSTICE subreddit. The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,700 retweets and 3,100 likes in six months. Two days later, on December 17th, Twitter user tweeted an image of a man taking off his shirt and an image of talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres looking unimpressed, referencing a scene in which Kylo Renn takes off his shirt in The Last Jedi. The post (shown below) received more than 25 retweets and 60 likes in less than six months. The earliest know iteration of the meme was posted on December 15th, 2017 by Twitter user That day, they posted an image from the video game Kingdom Hearts with the caption "#TheLastJedi spoiler but no context," referring to the 2017 film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. ![]()
